p1c-Learners explore the games industry through a focused case study of one computer/console game:Game Types

Action and Adventure:

Action and adventure is a genre which has  both the action and adventure elements in one genre. They use things from the action element  such as explosions or fighting while also giving the player a journey to go on within the game and also even a new world to explore on the game. Games now include the option to choose to go with the action genre instead of adventure genre as the adventure genre is currently decreasing in popularity and it is declining in sales which means game developers are more encouraged to add more of an action element and not adventure as much.

Driving and RacingThe racing and driving genre is games were it means the player is usually driving in a car, van or motorbike etc. and driving round a track and the first person to finish to track first wins.  The most popular games in this genre include forza, Need for speed and project cars. Most games in this genre come under one of two categories; either arcade or stimulation.

First person shooter:

First-Person Shooter are games in which the camera angle is a first person frontal view and you can hold the gun with objectives that involves you are shooting at people or objectives. Some popular first person shooting games include Call of Duty, Battlefield, Far Cry. These type of games have a storyline while playing however once you are killed in the game you can respawn.

Platform and Puzzle:

A platform game is a video game in which a character is guided through platforms by jumping. The character will be made to overcome obstacles within the game in order to level up in the game. Most platform and Puzzle games have a jump button it is very rare for them not to have one. A jump button is needed for players to complete the game as they will be required to jump from platform to platform, whilst also avoiding obstacle  that will try and stop the gamer from getting to their destination. A very famous platform and puzzle game is Mario Brothers.
Role-Playing:
Role- playing games make you take on the role or 'persona' of someone else or more than one person. An example of a role-playing game is Sims freeplay, as you take on the role of a sim or more than one sim and control their 'life' within the game. Another example of a role--playing game is runescape. These games are popular with all ages as they are family friendly although can be confusing to play. However, unlike sims, there are some role-playing games that are age-ratings.

 Strategy and Stimulation:

Strategy and Stimulation games are games that play out realistic situations such as driving a car or flying a plane. Some of these can take hours to play and can be complex. These games often require an element of strategy as they are generally much harder than arcade games etc.

Sports:

Sport games are simply games that stimulate the practice of sport. These can include team sports, track, field, extreme and combat sports. In some games they emphasize actually playing the sport such as WII Fit. Other sports games emphasize sport management and strategy e.g. Championship Manager.
